Court orders senator to pay newspaper vendor N100k for slapping him

Justice Winifred Effiong of an Akwa Ibom state High Court has ordered former Senator Anietie Okon, to pay a newspaper vendor, Ndifereke Etim, N100,000 as damages for slapping him unjustly at the Akwa Ibom state government house in September 2015.

Etim, who sells newspapers had gone to the banquet hall of the Akwa Ibom Government House, Uyo, during the swearing-in ceremony of a new Chairman for the Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers, to sell some newspapers when he ran to the Senator to sell some of his newspapers.

According to Etim, what he received from the Senator were hot slaps and accusation that he wanted to steal his wallet.

An embarrassed Etim who maintained his innocence, reported the matter to the state chapter of the Newspaper Distributors Association of Nigeria, who filed a civil suit against Aniete on his behalf.

Speaking to Premium Times, Etim said
“When he finished slapping me, he(Anietie) accused me of stealing his wallet. But God knows I am not a thief, I sell newspapers to take care of myself and my family. He didn’t even search me to see if I had his wallet on me or not.”
Delivering judgement in the suit today, Justice Winifred Effiong, ruled that the former Senator's action against Etim was degrading and unacceptable and was against his Etim’s right to the dignity of his person as guaranteed by Section 34(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as the African Charter on human and people’s right.

Justice Effiong ordered the Senator to pay Etim N100,000 as damages and also N50,000 as cost for litigation. He also granted an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the former senator or his agents from further breaching of the applicant’s fundamental human rights.

Brother of late Col. Otobrise Umusu writes open letter to Pres. Buhari
Suspected Boko Haram members ambushed and killed a senior Nigerian Army officer, Lt. Col. Otos Umusu - the Commanding Officer, 118 Task Force Battalion in Borno State on Dec. 12th. His brother has written an open letter to president Buhari. Read after the cut...

Your Excellency,
My name is Odiriviroro Umusu I am the immediate junior brother of one of your officers Lieutenant Colonel Otobrise Umusu the Commanding Officer, 118 Task Force Battalion in Borno State, who was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, in an ambush on Monday 12th December 2016 on his way to Baga.

Lieutenant Colonel Otobrise Umusu dedicated his life to serving Nigeria from an early age:
·        1991 – 1996 – Nigeria Military School - Zaria
·        1996 – 1997 – Soldier serving with the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps
·        1997 – 2002 – Nigerian Defence Academy  -  Kaduna
·        Commissioned an officer in Infantry Corps  2002
·        Served as an officer from 2002 – 2016 in:
o   Takum in the North East of Nigeria
o   Republic of Sierra Leone
o   Ibadan
o   The Niger Delta
o   Army Head Quarters – Abuja
o   Maiduguri – where he died in service to Nigeria, his country
Your Excellency; if you are reading this, the name UMUSU will ring a bell as my father Brigadier General Sylvester Ugege Umusu served under you and also worked with you when you headed PTF. It is now Wednesday 14th December 2016 and as I write this letter with tears in my eyes, my father, my brother’s wife Ufuoma Umusu and his siblings have not been contacted by you, your office, the Chief of Defence Staff or the Chief of Army Staff to offer your condolences for our loss. My brave brother sacrificed his life and future with his family to make yours and every Nigerian’s today safe.  In my humble opinion we deserve your acknowledgement and appreciation and as a former army officer I know you appreciate the sacrifice involved in serving your country and it saddens me that in over 24 hours after the passing of my brother a call has not been made to my family. I do not under any circumstances believe this is too much to ask; for the falling heroes of our beloved country Nigeria.
My family has served Nigeria in her armed forces and continues to do so, we have paid the greatest price for that service; the very young life of my beloved brother Lieutenant Colonel Otobrise Umusu who was killed in action. As his family we have lots of questions to ask surrounding his death:
·        When will an investigation be carried out?
·        Will there be an investigation?
·        My brother bled out, why did his team not have the right equipment for such eventuality
·        What lessons can be learnt from this?
·        What is being done to stop funding to Boko Haram?
o   Every weapon, vehicle purchase or general equipment purchase by Boko Haram must leave a paper trail
o   Can the expert forensic accounting skills used by the EFCC not be employed to disrupt their operations?

Your Excellency, you may deem this letter as disrespectful and not the right procedure in dealing with this matter but am all but a Nigerian citizen that is grieving the loss of his beloved brother and in my humble opinion we deserve to know the who, what and why that happened to our brother on that terrible day and as his Command in Chief you are ultimately responsible for reaching out to all the families of our fallen heroes to assure them their loved ones did not die in vain.

He was expected to go to school but he ended up getting himself involved in drugs.
“This boy doesn’t even have an education. He has been living in Dublin as a kid and he refused to go school, instead he got addicted to drugs,”a family source said
The source added that on the day of the attack, the accused was passing the night at his parents home when he accosted his father in the toilet and ordered him to lie flat on the floor. He then brought out a knife he hid behind him and stabbed his father on the back.

His mother, after hearing her husband shouting for help, ran to the toilet only for her to also get stabbed. The father died on the spot while the mother was resuscitated by medical officers at the emergency bay on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“He thought he had killed both of them. After stabbing them, he pulled out a cloth to cover them, and he went to the bathroom to clean up. He got dressed, took his father’s phones, his ATM cards and went straight to the father’s fuel station at Palm Avenue. He got there and started harassing the station manager, demanding for money.” the source said
The police was invited and the suspect was arrested. He has been transferred to the Homicide Section at the Lagos State CID in Panti for further interrogation.
“Just like his other brother (who is) studying Medicine in the US, he has been begging this boy to go to school and this has always been the cause of the misunderstanding.”the source added

2 soldiers implicated after 2 civilians are nabbed with hard drugs worth N62.4 million

Two suspected smugglers have been arrested after they were found transporting parcels of hard drugs believed to be worth N62.4 million.

The suspects, Itobo Egede and Munirudeen Ikumapayi, were arrested by Operatives of the Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service at different Locations -
one at the Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode Expressway, Ogun State and the other at  Gbeaji Customs check-point, Seme Expressway in Lagos State.

One of the suspects, Egede, while narrating his ordeal to Vanguard, implicated two soldiers as accomplices in the crime. He explained that he is a taxi driver from Cross River State who came to Lagos to visit his sister and was travelling back home. According to him, he stopped a bus travelling to Calabar and after negotiating the fare to N4,000 from the N10,000 at which it was placed, he got into the bus which had only the driver and two soldiers in it.

The bus they were travelling in was stopped by Customs Officers at a check point in Ijebu-Ode leading to the discovery of the goods. Egede said he was arrested together with the driver and put in a patrol van but after a while, he did not see the driver anymore. He claims that the soldiers asked him to provide money so they could bribe the Customs Officers. “I was carrying N100,000 my sister gave me, but the soldiers asked me how much I had on me so they would give the Customs Officers to release us. I then gave them N50,000 but they refused to collect the money from the soldiers.”

It has been gathered through a security source that the soldiers were handed over to the military authority for in-house disciplinary action.

The second suspect, Ikumapayi, has also claimed to be innocent, stating that he was a commercial driver who plied the Osun-Lagos route and the drugs found in his bus belonged to a woman who paid him to deliver the parcel to Osun State.

“I was loading my bus at Oshodi when one woman came with a parcel concealed in a wrapper and asked me to deliver it to someone in Osogbo, Osun State. I charged her N2,000 but she gave me N1,000 which I collected. She also gave me the phone number of the receiver and collected my phone number too. But I did not check the parcel before taking off."

Both suspects will be charged after the substance suspected to be Canabis has been subjected to scientific examination, said Lawal Opeloyeru, Principal Staff Officer, PSO, of NDLEA, Chief Superintendent of Narcotics.
